I think you are right. The sql flew south. WOW, I'm a really new member now!

Maybe some little devil thought it funny to sweep out the db.

doh yea.. what he said... An SQL restore will probably take place soon. and we will all become obsolete.

hahaha yea.. I have a cached copy of a page and it says Version 3. this new one is Version 3.5.3 so yea an upgrade gone south.

Hey it's like we are all floating in space huh? :cool:

The actual problem is much more strange than anyone here guessed. We're running these forums off a virtual server which is running under the Xen system. The main xen box (in other words, the host machine)'s hardware apparently took a dive, which corrupted our old forums disk image.

Now here's where it gets wacky: when we booted back into the forums box, the database showed no corruption, but was in the state it was in on january 16th, when Cody was the only user. It was as if the last three weeks of posts just hadn't happened at all. We can't explain exactly how it happened.

Anyway we replaced the hardware, made a new forums image, and started doing remote backups of the database, so all should be well now. Even if the thing takes a dive again, we can easily restore it on any machine.

So about those avatars..
I'm guessing that the forums had to be reinstalled, and are therefore back at the default, or at least the original settings.

Unless Bluehost has some compelling reason to now prevent avatars, I imagine that capability will be back as soon as one of the Admins gets around to turning it on in the admin cp.

Btw, why is pics in signatures a no no, and could it perhaps be a yes yes? I'm just curious. At this point I don't even have a signature :) but several od us do.

ok, so this time I created myself a test user account and tracked down the right permissions for avatars.

You know, I would be perfect if everyone would stop pointing out my mistakes. ;)

I'll talk to an Admin about this. I have mixed feelings about it. I'd like to have some user bars in my siggy. :p

Some people like putting HUGE pictures in signatures. If we allow it, we'll just make some signature rules and enforce when needed. :p
