problem with bash/unix/something???

I'm new to unix so this could be something dumb, but when i log in via ssh since saturday the command line says

-bash-3.00$

and i can't use commands like 'edit'. Have i switched 'bash' on by accident or something? What is bash anyway?

Like i say this is all new to me, any help and advice appreciated!

Fixed it now, by entering "bash". Would still appreciate some explanation though :)
