I'm moving Joomla! from my Bluhost server to another. I think I've done the database stuff OK, but downloading and re-uploading all the files via FTP causes them to lose all their permissions. I've read that putting all the files into a tar archive will retain the file permissions. I know how to unpack a tar archive, but I don't know how to create one. Does the File Manager do this somewhere? I can't find any option to do so.

To create a tar file from the files on your account, you will have to get SSH enabled.

You might also asking support so see if they can do if for you.

Come to think of it, try using the home or full backup feature in cPanel.

No no, I'm using about 110GB so a home or full backup is not an option.

Pfffft, I understood moving Joomla was a fairly easy process. Nobody mentioned all this stuff.

I'll ask Bluehost if they can tar the directory for me. Thanks for your help.

EDIT: Wait, the new version of File Manager does have a compression utility. Just right-click on any directory and choose compress. Just thought I'd write that here in case anyone else has similar problems.
