Hi,

I've several domains hosted here in Bluehost. One of them is www.strategocorp.com.

Currently I'd like to test SmartFoxServer, a multiplayer server for flash application. The SmartFoxServer would need JRE 1.4.2 and open a new port.

And to activate SmartFoxServer in Linux OS would require me to execute the 'start.sh' file (a shell file).

Is it possible to run SmartFoxServer in my shared hosting here in Bluehost? If it's, how can I do that? Do I need a Virtual Private Hosting? And is it possible to implement it in my shared hosting?

Thank you in advance.

PITRA

You are able to open a network port on your shared hosting, but according to Bluehost support staff via email, you can run your process for a maximum of 20 minutes. It is most likely a cronjob has been setup to kill off any process that runs longer than that.

So in summary, SmartFoxServer will not work longer than 20 minutes.

To open the port you would need, you would have to purchase a dedicated IP for your account ($30 per year).

The limitation on the time length any process can run is removed when your account has a dedicated IP, as well.

I disagree - On a dedicated IP, you will still be using a shared hosting service. To avoid any unfairness to other users on the same box, your process capabilities should still be limited to the amount of time allowed.

However, a dedicated server will not be of any issue, considering the price you'll be paying for.

I think people are mixing up CPU time allotments with process time allotments

I have a dedicated IP and have been running my TeamSpeak server for months. Because I have a dedicated IP there is no process time limit. However, I have the same CPU limits as anyone else ... the TS server is just very efficient so the CPU thang has never been an issue. :)

I don't know if "SmartFoxServer" will run here BUT TS is also initiated with a *.sh file and opens a port so if JRE 1.4.2 is available and the server is efficient there is a good chance it will run here.
