Not sure where to post this, I've received a lot of good help in this forum so I thought I'd try here for this problem.
I installed XAMPP locally (of course) and installed WP into it. I can access the XAMPP control panel to start the local server, but when I browse to http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/index.php all I see the start-up blog that WP installs. To where should I browse to see the WP control panel (i.e. Dashboard etc.)?

http://localhost/wordpress/wp-login/ should take you to the dashboard login

Have you copied the wordpress tables from the database on your hosting to the database on XAMPP?
When you loaded the Wordpress files into XAMPP did toy remember to delete the WordPress install file?

No, I'm not that far along yet. I want to be sure the local installation of WP under XAMPP works before I import the host data into the tables.
This is an instance of WP under XAMPPLite.
I see you too are having problems with XAMPPLite. I am currently in a rather long thread entitled "XAMPP is workiing but when installing WordPress..."
and the procedure I followed is exactly as Izzy described.

1. Have you copied the wordpress tables from the database on your hosting to the database on XAMPP?
2. When you loaded the Wordpress files into XAMPP did toy remember to delete the WordPress install file?
1. After getting XAMPP and phpMyAdmin working right for my local installation, I installed Wordpress and populated its tables with a backup from my online blog.
BIG MISTAKE!!
As a result, the local WP tables contain links to the remotely hosted (online) blog, and diddling around with local WP Admin panel changes the online blog.
Of course this is obvious once a person has experienced it but for a beginner this is a real hidden snafu. Unless I did something else wrong (and I wouldn't be surprised if I did).
So the question is, how does one import the online blog data to the local blog? Or does one?
2. No, I didn't remember. Would this be part of my problem? Why does one have to delete the install.php file?

No, BlueHost does not allow the database linked to from another remote hosting, localhost in this case.
