I see a number of ways to FTP via browser or Java applet or VBS from the control panel. I see little problems with each of these for users that I need to give upload capabilities.

I need to allow file upload to a specific directory by people. These will be volunteers for international relief trips who may have minimum PC or Mac skills.

Can I get them access to a single folder via File Manager? It seemed like the cleanest interface.

You can use the FTP setup options in cPanel to set up an FTP account that only has access to a specific folder within your account.

Anyone you supply the userid and password for that access to can then use any FTP program they like to transfer any files they like to/from that folder without being able to touch anything else on your site.

Thanks, Stephan. I wanted to avoid having them set up an FTP program as this organization has had over 400 trips with 5 to 25 people per trip that may need to upload when they return. I will keep FTP clients as a secondary option for now. I'd like to give out a url, username and password for a browser based file upload system.

Unless you set up one FTP account with access to the specified folder you want them to use the only other alternative is to give them access to your entire account with the risk that they will upload to the wrong place or wipe out all of the other content of your account.

With one FTP account set up with access restricted to a given folder you just hand out the details on how to use that account to upload and let people use whatever browser or ftp program they like to do the actual upload.

May I suggest "Unlimited FTP." http://unlimitedftp.com

It's free. You set up what you want to share and what you don't. You send them the url, they paste it in a browser and "voila" they are in.

I use it to give my customers limited access to folders on my account here. And believe me these people have VERY limited ftp skills! If they can drag and drop, they can do it.

GOD Bless,

If you want drag and drop then set up a webdisk on the folder and give the details for that to everyone that needs it.
