View Full Version : How to move/copy a folder's contents to the root directory?

Hi,

I want to move the contents of one folder (~50mb, lots of files, imbedded folders) to my root directory so I can stop using an automatic redirect when my domain is called. Last night, I tried to copy the folder's contents with WS_FTP and paste in the root, but about 8 hours later, I was 3% done. I had someone at the office--across the country--try this morning with similar painfully slow transfer rates.

Is there a better way to do this? It seems like something that should work quickly. The only reason I don't want to download to my machine and reupload is because there are a few PGP folders that won't properly download. Similarly, I don't want to download the 600mb backup zip file, extract it, and then upload what files I need.

Thanks for your help!

To move folders/files in CPanel, click on the "File Manager" icon and navigate to the folder/files you want to move, by clicking on the icons. When you've found the folder/files you want to move, click on the name (to prevent from further navigating) and choose the "Move this folder/file" link on the right. Then navigate to the appropriate folder in the left and save your changes. It's that simple. :)

Hi,

The problem is that I want the contents of the folder... and there are a lot of files (unless I really do have to manually go through and move every folder and file individually...) I was hoping there was a way to copy everything at once.

You can transfer whole folders in the method I posted. However, from your original post... you said you were trying to transfer files via FTP. FTP should be just as fast, so long as it's from the server to another portion of the server. You're not trying to upload the same goods, again, are you? FTP is your best bet.

I'm not doing any uploading, but the FTP just wasn't working for me (CA) nor at the office (FL).

If I move a folder, can I extract its contents? I want to move the contents of one folder (some 10-15 folders, and 20 or so files) to the root directory. As far as I can tell, I have to move each of these folders individually in the control panel file manager, as opposed to copy/pasting all the files/folders at once, and moving them in one fell swing.
