I checked the wordpress.org support forums and found that the issue may be with the provider. I used Fantastico to install WordPress. I have configured WP so that anyone can register. The problem is that when someone registers it sends them an email with their initial password. New users are not receiving this email.
Can anyone help?

Have you set up the wordpress email address on your domain so thhat the emails go from that address rather than from your server box number at BlueHost. The recipient's spam filter may be identifying the emails as spam particularly if the from address doesn't match your domain name (as it wouldn.t if you haven't set up the email address).
I followed felgall's advise of creating an email wordpress@myprimarydomainname.com and I was able to fix this same problem that I was having with my Wordpress blog on Bluehost for my PRIMARY domain.
However, I am having the same problem with the Workpress site for my ADDON domain. That is, emails are not being received by those who register at my Wordpress blog. There are no errors in the registration process, and the new user appears in the Wordpress user admin panel. The email password is just not being sent. (I've tested with myown email accounts, and it's not a spam issue).
I also created a wordpress@myaddondomain.com, and wordpress@myaddondomain.myprimarydomain.com
Any thoughts of what might be unique to this addon domain?
I'm having the same issue and currently looking into various results.. please let me know if you find a solution...
thanks, andrew
I used this WP Mail SMTP (http://www.callum-macdonald.com/code/wp-mail-smtp/)plugin as a work-around and it worked perfectly.
I hope it works for you as well.

i recently faced same problem
WP was hosted under:
subdomain.mydomain.com/blog/
at first, new users were not getting email with password
after reading this post, I created the following email address:
wordpress@subdomain.mydomain.com
now new users are receiving email from wordpress@subdomain.mydomain.com which contains the new password
