How do we register a new domain and start a new site on our Bluehost space? I assume we can have multiple domains and sites, correct? And is this where a content management system is recommended? I notice there are a lot of CMSs available through Fantastico, how do you evaluate which is best for your needs?

How do we register a new domain and start a new site on our Bluehost space? I assume we can have multiple domains and sites, correct?Go to the Control Panel, and look at the icons in the "Domains" section. To register an entirely new domain, choose Register a Domain, then set it up as an Addon Domain. To create a subdomain (which doesn't have to be registered), choose Subdomains.
There is no limit to the number of domains you can host under your account, though all account limits (space, transfer bandwidth, emails per hour, CPU usage, etc.) apply at the account level, in aggregate, not at the domain level, so there are some practical limits.

What do you mean by "subdomain?" How is a subdomain different from just a webpage generated within the domain name?

Don't confuse domains with webpages. Domains are where webpages live.
Say you want the world to know your domain as "lydiassfuff.org" but your main domain is named "lydiasdomain.com".
As a "subdomain" one gets to lydiasstuff by browsing to
http://lydiasstuff.lydiasdomain.com.
As an addon, one gets to lydiasstuff by browsing to
http://www.lydiasstuff.org.
Does this help?

That's correct. Another example... Say your main domain is www.mydomain.com. Now you want to put up a page about mydogs. You could create a mydogs subdirectory under public_html, and put an index.html in it with the code for a page about mydogs. To access it, users would go to www.mydomain.com/mydogs.
But if you create a mydogs subdomain, users could get to it via mydogs.mydomain.com. This is free, and doesn't require any domain registration, since it's just a part of your existing domain.
Finally, you could actually register an entirely new domain, www.mydogs.com, and make that an addon domain under your BH account. Now, users would get to that site simply by going to www.mydogs.com.
What tends to confuse people is that, in the BH scheme of things, the files for mydogs will all be in the public_html/mydogs subdirectory, whether it's just a subdirectory of your main domain, a subdomain, or an addon domain!

Ok, I think I get it, thanks! Here's a more pressing question: I just noticed something on my blog:
www.lydiasaoldisks.com/blog
On the sidebar, all the information has gotten pushed down way to the bottom! At least that's how it's now appearing on my screen. Why? What happened? I didn't do anything to the sidebar, at least that I know of. How do I return the sidebar information back up to the top??

That's because the very last image (JiffyPop at the bottom of your page) intrudes into the area reserved for your sidebar, shoving it down. If it were me, I would fix the problem by reducing the size of both images so they fit within the body portion of your template. You could also place one image beneath the other if you need to maintain their sizes.
If you cannot see this on your monitor, try adjusting the contrast a bit so you can see the difference in backgrounds between the image background and the template background.

I eventually figured out it was the Jiffy Pop pic that was messing things up -what I'm wondering now is why it only shows up that way on one computer that I use. On all the others that I use, the picture does not intrude into the sidebar. In fact, of all the folks I've asked to look at it, only you have said you see it intruding.
Just one more great mystery for me...
