I am trying to use Wordpress's free install and a volunteer sent me a questionnaire with these two queries:

9. What is your FTP login?
10. What is your FTP password?

How do I find this information?

You can create an FTP account by going to "FTP Accounts" under cPanel. They're either going to need access to your mysql database as well or you're going to have to go through and create a database for them to install to, which is pretty easy with the mysql wizard.

I can't recommend giving them your cPanel login information, they don't really need it as long as they can FTP to the folder they're installing to and have the mysql information.

I wrote a step-by-step guide (http://www.bluehostforum.com/showthread.php?t=10935) to installing wordpress if you'd like to skim over it. It would help familiarize you with the tools and their functionality.

3. Click on the wordpress archive that is now in your file list in file manager and select Extract File Contents from the top right

The archive is the file you downloaded from wordpress, the zip or the tar.

thanks for your help. Apparently I am in over my head. I had WP installed for free, but I have absolutely no idea what to do with the BlueHost control panel, or how it relates to the blog. Hell, I don't even know what a "directory" is which makes even the explicit instructions on the WordPress docs out of my league.
Is there something available for complete novices? Or would you recommend just giving up? I have reached an unbelievable level of frustration. I had no idea this would be this much of a pain in the ass.

A directory is just another name for a folder.

The blog will consist of some files that you have uploaded to a particular directory/folder (depending on what address you want people to access it at - if you want people to access it as your main domain you need it uploaded to the public_html folder, if you want it in a folder within that or a sub-domain or add-on domain then you need to create the folder or sub/add-on domain first and upload it there).

The other part of the blog is some tables in a database. These tables get created the first time you try to access the blog after uploading everything.

After a childish fit of frustration, I have recovered and am making progress. It's a terrible disappointment to discover that your PC doesn't care if you hold your breath until you turn blue. I have found that computers do respond to threats, however. :D
