I am expecting to sign up a new account (my first) with Bluehost in the near term. I have a few questions that I would appreciate answers on beforehand, please:
1. Is it possible to configure Joomla 1.x doing a manual install vs the Fantastico install? I have some lingering difficulties on another service with a Joomla install using Fantastico (folder and file ownership)?
2. In the present default PHP running, is the global registration turned off?
Many Thanks,
DataMan
1. Yes, that's how it was designed.
2. Yes, PHP5 is the default.

How does one go about doing a manual install? I am hosting with HostMonster, but I would think this would be the same for both, correct? The reason I am looking to do a manual install is because Fantastico is using Joomla 1.0 and I would like to start some projects in Joomla 1.5 and I am having difficulty in finding when/if this will be available via Fantastico.
Thanks for any assistance.

http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/frs/ and at the bottom of the page you will find version 1.5 that you can download to your computer and then upload to your site.

Thanks Felgall. Is that it? That seems very straightforward. Are there any risks in doing it this way vs using Fantastico? Is it less secure, more hackable, are the folder/file permissions set correctly? I presume that if this method works fine for Joomla that other addon software would use the same procedure?
Thanks for your help.

A manual install allows you access to all the configuration options when you do the install and makes it easier to keep up to date. It is therefore at least as secure as the Fantastico version (which for some software can run several moths behind with making security patches available).
The reason for Fantastico is to make it easier for newbies to install software when they don't know enough to be able to do a manual install - a manual install is always the better choice if you can do it.

Thanks Stephen. I would probably be considered one of those newbies, at least when it comes to database driven sites. Besides uploading/installing the Joomla 1.5 that I download, I will need to setup a MySQL database as well, correct? Are there any particulars or things I should be aware in regards to this? For this I would intend to use the 'MySQL Databases' in Cpanel to create the database.
Thanks again for your help. I was very happy to find that this seems like a very doable option, even for someone of my limited experience level.

The next option to the right of the database option is the database wizard which takes you through all the steps of how to set up both the database and the user/password that you will need to access it. See http://www.felgall.com/cpanel1.htm for more detailed step by step instructions I wrote on how to use that option to set up a database.

When uploading to the site would you load all files unzipped into the PHP folder and then try to install. I am trying to figure out how you would load the program. Also do we need to configure for PHP5 to use 1.5.
