My Mailman lists have stopped working - I send mail to the list (which is moderated) and nothing happens, no notice that I have messages awaiting my approval. I go to the Admin and Pending pages and there the messages sit, even though I haven't been notified that they are there. I accept the messages but they aren't sent out - I don't receive them and none of the members of the list receive them, but they do show up in the list archives.

Any idea as to what is going on? This started a few days ago.

Thanks,
Aoife

Guess I'll reply to my own post since BH hasn't responded to my open tickets and no one else has replied to my first post here. Does anyone have any ideas, other than going to Dada Mail? I've been using Mailman hosted by various providers for the past 7 years and really don't want to go to something else....

The best way to contact support is via the big blue Live Chat button at the bottom left of the home page.

Please inform us when you find out what was wrong .. many of us depend on it, and having this solution archived will help

They didn't tell me what was wrong, even though I asked. An admin person went in and 'fixed' the problem and I got all my emails and all the messages assoicated with pending approvals.

thats very common with BH - if live chat fixes an issue (L1 or sometimes L2 support) they have little time to inform about the fix or how to avoid falling into the trap in future. but hopefully the resolution was instantaneous.

I have mailing lists that seem to work most of the time.

First thing I discovered is that there is a rate limiter of about 50 e-mails per hour. If you have lots of people subscribed to the list you need to ask Bluehost to up the limit.

Secondly, about once a month their mail servers get seriously out of date with sending out e-mail. (I have had about 2 days delay on some mails). At some point, I think they also drop mails on the floor. (I have had that happen too). We have a backup mailing list elsewhere for when that happens.

Mail is also blacklisted by comcast on a regular basis. I have had this happen more times than I care to mention. We try and run our organisation by e-mail, and the comcast member has had to resort to using the account on bluehost to read e-mails.

The comcast problem is caused by people setting up redirects from BlueHost mail accounts to their Comcast mail accounts rather than just downloading the emails from both places. because the spam gets forwarded with the rest of the mail Comcast then identify BlueHost as the spammer even though it is just a redirect set up on a BlueHost account. If Comcast properly identified where spam originated from then it wouldn't happen. If people didn't set up unnecessary redirects on email accounts it wouldn't happen either.
