I am trying to put a hit counter on my site but I am having trouble finding one. Does anyone have any advice?

You could always just use the web stats in the control panel. Otherwise, if you want to see a number displayed on the bottom of the web page, look in the control panel and find CGI Center. There is a hit counter there.
Here is a simple php counter I have on one of my sites:

Is it possible to edit the hit counter so it would show up like: 99
and not 00099 until the next digit is needed?
If so, how would it be done?

If you want to give your site an old fashioned new to the web 20th century feel then by all means use a hit counter. Hit counters are somewhat meaningless stats since all they are is a count of all the file download requests from the server and so for one visitor visiting one page you would have somewhere around 5 to 25 hits.
If you prefer a modern 21st century appearance then dump the hit counter and use the stats options in cPanel to check on how many hits, page views and visitors your pages get.
How you would change a hit counter to not display leading zeros wiould depend on which of the thousands of different hit counters it is you are using on your page.
