View Full Version : Do I Even Use an Addon Domain for this?

(Sorry if this is a remarkably stupid question.)
We have a domain with a registrar other than BlueHost (and no interest in transferring it) and email with another company (in case it matters, people use the webmail). We just want the site hosted with BH, is there any way to do that without changing the nameservers?
I changed the A record last night, waited for it, and then tried to add it, and cPanel asked for the EPP code, which seems weird. I have the code, but I want to know if there's a better way to do this (or if this way makes any sense at all) before I enter it.
Thanks for any help.

Authorization codes are only used to transfer a domain. I'd ask support about this.

I think a read that it's now policy to not add domains to you account if you don't point the name servers, I may be wrong. But you should be able to point he name servers to bluehost then the MX record back to the register to keep your email there.

Basil: Yeah, that's why I'm confused. cPanel said it was to prove ownership of the domain, but I don't see why that's necessary if I'm not transferring and I've created an A record.
areidmtm: Thanks for the info, but we can't point the nameservers. Even if not getting email for some period of time while it propagages wasn't an issue, Yahoo doesn't tell you what your mx records need to be (if they're changed, the only way to get them back to Yahoo's are to use yahoo nameservers, go to your dns settings and have the whole thing set to the default).

Really?
host -t mx yahoo.com yields this..
yahoo.com mail is handled by 1 a.mx.mail.yahoo.com.
yahoo.com mail is handled by 1 b.mx.mail.yahoo.com.
yahoo.com mail is handled by 1 c.mx.mail.yahoo.com.
yahoo.com mail is handled by 1 d.mx.mail.yahoo.com.
yahoo.com mail is handled by 1 e.mx.mail.yahoo.com.
yahoo.com mail is handled by 1 f.mx.mail.yahoo.com.
yahoo.com mail is handled by 1 g.mx.mail.yahoo.com.

Thanks, but (sorry I'm so clueless) I have no idea what that means. Yahoo's display of the mx records just says "Yahoo! Mail Server," with priorities 20 and 30, and we still don't want to have to redelegate because (as we understand it anyway) we might lose email during the switch.
If I gave cPanel the EPP code like it wants, would it work? I'm not thrilled with the fact that I'm expected to, but we really don't want to mess with the email.

Why not ask support which way they recommend. They can possibly help you to set it up even if there isn't an option in cPanel to handle the way you want it.
