Whitelist response time?

I have activated the whitelist function on my email address. It seems to be working but when I new person sends me an email it is taking 4 to 5 hours to get the response from the system informing the emailer that s/he has to register first to prove that s/he is a "real live human being". Should it take this long?

Emails can take anything between a couple of minutes and several days to be delivered depending on the load on all the email servers that the message passes through.
