I have seen so many people ask this question (How Do I Build A website) And even some have asked why does my website say under construction.Here is some help on starting your website
1.You need to get some kind of program intended for website building.
You can download a basic program here (trial Version) to get you started.
http://www.coffeecup.com/html-editor/download.php
2. Read about html as much as you can.
3. Example of html...
html>
<head>
<title>
if you want red text (type) <FONT COLOR="RED" >Title goes here(title is usally the name of the website or short description) Goes Between title.</FONT>
</title>
</head>
<body>In the body is where images and text are placed
example to center the image you would do this<center><input type="image" src="/logos/dog.jpg"></center>
4. Keeping files and folders simple (photos go in photos folder, logos in logos folder)Same as on the server (your hosting provider..your website folders under www folder already on the server.)
For example, if you do this (<input type="image" src="/logos/dog.jpg"> and on the server you upload the dog.jpg photo to a folder called banners it usally will not show up when you test it because your browser is looking for the dog photo in the logos folder and you put it in the banners folder. The folders need to be named the same.

5.With your ftp program (or use the ftp manager in the control panel) connect you will see your computer files on the left and the server files on the right.click on the www folder and make folders named the same as whats on your computer (if your folder for images is photos on your computer make one called photos on the server) upload photos there.All your basic html files go in www also Not in a folder you make, just under the www folder already on the server.

Now the first page on your website is called index.html it's already on the server.You need to make one and upload it.It will ask if you want to over write it.Example do the above and add what you want,save it as index.html upload it in the www folder and you should see what you have made (if you uploaded your photos).
Anyone can add to this if they want to.I'm just showing the simple way to start building a page.

What is HTML?
HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the lingua franca of the Internet. It is not a language per se, so you don't need any prior programming experience, though common sense is very much a required attribute!

What is ftp?
File Transfer Protocol is a program used to upload files to a server.

What is index.html mean?
Index is the first page on a website (most of the time)

What does over write mean and how do you do it???
It means to replace a file that is named the same as another
To do it just click yes on the box that pop's up

Can this post be made "sticky"? It's one of the most clear expositions of "Step 1.x" that I've seen.

I should've included a quote (I guess), but the post to which I was referring is the thread starter (by Troy).

There are a few post I would like to see made a sticky.I see the same question asked on other subjects that has already been answerd before.there are some good topics
on this forum I would hate to see them lost.

That isn't a great introduction to websites. I'd expand on your html a bit further, and try include some pictures about it, etc. FTP can also be difficult for beginners. If you don't want to, I can write a tutorial on creating a website.

Either way, a post like this needs to be stickied.

Good explanation. My question - can I do all you have mentioned and THEN put it online (publish it)?
I am planning to contract with bluehost for web hosting and initially manage two websites from this account. Possible?
The first is a photo gallery now running on another web host, but which I hope to redesign from scratch and move it to bluehost. Possible?
The second is a blog currently on WordPress.com which I would move to a new domain name which I own, but has never been propogated anywhere. Here the plan is to get from WordPress their blog program designed for other web hosts, modify the templates to my own specifications, then transfer the current WordPress.com blog to this site. Possible?
In both instances (they need not be simultaneous), the goal would be the least interuption in access by users and search engines.
I'd also like to find the best way to "re-direct" users and search engines to the "new site" when it is published.
Suggestions REALLY welcome for all of the above. I am pretty much a novice in this area and NEED the help.
Thanks

One additional thought that a newcomer may not realize and which will drive them crazy in trying to debug:

UPPERCASE vs lowercase is important when dealing with a Linux server which is what BH is using. References to page(s) must be made in the same case as the actual file that's stored on the server.

An example: http://myweb.com/MyPictures.html is different than:

http://myweb.com/mypictures.html

On a Microsoft-based server this case issue isn't important, but here on BH it can (and often does) drive someone to distraction trying to find out why a page won't work when the file IS present but just doesn't appear.

Suggestion: do everything in one case (lower).

What about using a Contact Management system. My friend suggested Mambo. It has made life easy in some respects, but at times the editor in Mambo doesn't get it right, and one still has to go into the code to straighten things out.
