Does anyone host a phpbb forum on bluehost? Can they handle a large active board without problems?
Thanks.

I don't host any forums on Bluehost servers, so I can't answer your question from a server standpoint. But from a software standpoint, take a look at this site (http://rankings.big-boards.com/)...there are some quite massive and/or active forums that use phpBB.

I host a PHPBB forum on my site. Granted at this point it does not have a huge member base it still has no problems. There are some MASSIVE phpbb forums running out there so I don't think you should have a problem with it if your forum gets pretty big.

I host a SMF board on the bluehost server. I love it! Easy to manage and everything. I just have 10 users on my board right now, need more users to join. :-( I also like the PHPBB forum as well but SMF the best.

That is a really good question!
Setting up a forum couldn't be easier thanks to the Fantastico addition to the control panel but I did read somewhere in the Bluehost TOS (http://helpdesk.bluehost.com/kb/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&root=15&id=111) that forums may be limited <rummages around ... nope, wasn't in the TOS> if excessive use is placed on the cpu of the server. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

a little aside here, but I think its worth noting: if your going to have a large community, it would be best to install phpBB yourself, and not do it automatically through scripts like Fantastico. Although they are good in the short term, for small uses, they soon wear out your favour. It doesnt take much to install phpBB, perhaps five minutes maximum, even if your not technically savvy.

Has anyone ever had a problem installing styles (aka themes) on a phpbb forums under bluehost? from the file manager, I can see the images, but I can't access them in any manner outside of that, it seems....

I had installed different themes when I set my board up so I could see what I liked or not and did not ever have any trouble. In the end I just customized my forum myself though.

the default subsilver, and the first one I installed, Jenova, work fine, but I've installed 50 more since then, and none of them work, it's a nightmare.

when you install themes, remeber to upload first, and them go to the theme area, and actualy hit the install button
i had like 5 uploaded but not installed because i forgot you had to tell them to install after it was uploaded, i figured just uploading would make them work.

No, I uploaded them, then unzipped, and then went and logged in as administrator on the forums and installed them. they show up on the forums, you can select them while logged in, and all, the images and stuff just don't work. Even though direct linking is allowed, pulling any given image up with a direct link gives me this error message odd error message.

You don't have permission to access /templates/subMerged/images/nieuws_icon_blanco.gif on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I can view the images from within the file manager with cpanel, but I can't via any other method, IE, or firefox. The default style (subsilver) works, and the first style I installed myself (jenova) works, but none of the others do. when I first installed jenova, it was doing the same thing, but I added the subdirectory to the allowed linking list in the hotlink protection, and it worked, however, I've even tried turning hotlink protection off altogether, and the new styles still won't work. There's got to be something I'm missing somewhere.
I thought maybe the uploads got corrupted, but like I said, I can view the images and stuff just fine in cpanel, I've even tried removing them from the forums, deleting the files, reuploading and reinstalling, and they still won't work. I've GOT to be missing something somewhere, I just don't have a clue what. :(

I have a general idea now, seems that it's not CHMOD-ing the files as it should be (and did the first go around), is there any way to set permission so that it'll mass-CHMOD things, so I don't have to manually do every single file for every one of a few dozen templates? Or at least, a way to make it do it next time I upload them?

I run a forum on Bluehost and as of today 2-22-06, I have 672 members. At first the forum ran smoothly and fast but since yesterday the main page loads so very slowly which is very annoying and on top of that, I have been getting those annoying CPU overload error messages every day. If this continues, I may have to start looking for another host server.

my forum has over 2000 posts and all is well. Only problem I've ever had was from me doing something wrong.

This page is over 371K, so loads slow 74 sec at 56K dialup. Problem is all the graphics, I think. Is it possible to lower resolution?
