Dear Friends,

I have been unable to determine which types of forum software are allowed to be installed on my bluehost web hosting account. Could someone please take the time to give me a list of the forum software allowed for installation.

Thanks,

Elmo

You can install any forum software that will run in a Linux environment, which includes pretty much every package you can think of.

Early Out,

Thank you for taking time to respond. I simply did not see any software in the control panel for installation and this prompted my question. Thanks again for the speedy response.

Cordially yours,

Elmo

On the Control Panel, hit Fantastico Deluxe - there are a couple of "discussion board" choices on there. However, you might be better off installing packages on your own, since the Fantastico offerings are often a version or two behind. Fantastico makes the installation easy, but at the price of not getting all the patches you really need.

Someone with more forum software experience will, I hope, check in with some suggestions (it's all foreign territory to me!).

Early Out and anyone else who wants to comment,

I have uploaded my phpBB3 forum files to my website. Now I am trying to following the instructions from the phpBB3 support forum for installation, but nothing is happening. I can't seem to make the install file execute.

Note: In file manager I do not see an option for execution of a file, although I have set my permissions to allow execution.

The short of it is I want to install this php program, but seem to be getting nowhere fast. Can anyone help me?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you my provide in this matter.

Again Thanks,

Elmo

I have not installed phpBB but here's my $0.02...

Rather than use the forums, you might check the instructions that came with the software package. You should not need to do anything with the permissions; it should just be a matter of pointing your browser to the installation file.

Redsox9,

Well, you may be absolutely correct. And that is in-fact what the installation program from phpBB3 says to do. Perhaps, I am just not pointing to the right direction for the installation file. However, I feel I am doing it correctly, but with a little uncertainty.

I am pointing to http://www.example.com/phpBB3/install/index.php as instructed by the support forum of phpBB3 the maker of the software, where www.example.com is my web address formal. Which happens to be for me http://www.littleslamproductions.org. But, I just get an error message that it does not exist on the server. But, it does exist on the server.

I don’t know if that helps, but based on that information perhaps you could be more specific in helping me with this problem.

Cordially yours,

Elmo

OK,

I was only able to install the forum software using the "Fantastico" option in the control panel. Although, this was really not the software I wanted to install; I still need to update it to its current version. Any suggestion from anyone on how to do this?

Thanks,

Elmo

Did you install the phpBB3 folder inside the public_html folder?

Did you install the phpBB3 folder inside the public_html folder?

No, I first installed it in my home directory, then removed it. I then installed it in a directory I named forum in my home directory. I then removed it. I never attempted to install into the public_html file.

Finally, I used the method stated in my previous post and installed a forum software. It works, but like I said it is not the software I want to install. I want to install the phpBB software.

So, I guess I should have installed to the Public_html folder?

Anything installed anywhere other than public_html will not be accessible to anyone but you (and the BH admins). Not quite what you're after with a forum! :)

Everything you want to be visible on the web needs to be in public_html or in a folder within public_html. The files outside of that are not part of the web.
