Does anyone know if there is a place on Bluehost that gives descriptions of all the offered software, plugins, etc? With so many things listed, it's hard to know what does what, and for the less-experienced it can take a long time to figure out what to use - what's compatible with what systems/formats, etc.

BlueHost offer very little software themselves. About the only one I have heard of anyone using is BlueMail - their form2mail processor.

You can run pretty much any software you like on BLueHost hosting provided that it is written in one of the languages that are supported and doesn't require special add-ons to be installed into the server itself.

The mail list of software provided via the control panel is that offered by Fantastico who provide their own autoinstaller for a lot of the common freely available PHP software. In most cases you will have better options as to how you install any of those scripts if you get the script from the appropriate provider directly and install it yourself rather than using the Fantastico install. The provider sites also generally have a section that lists many of the plugins that are available to use with their script.

If you have any questions about specific software or what software is available for a specific purpose then there will hopefully be someone who visits the forum here who will be able to provide you with that more specific information.

OK, maybe I didn't ask in the best way - I'm referring to the various choices in:
databases
ftp apps (not that I need them, but I did have one work well, then punk out on me - and they seem to be varying in their capabilites)
"software and services" - which lists quite a few

It would nice if there were some sort of chart or comparison of what all these things do, etc. ....

Since you have replied to my other questions about password protected sites, you know I will be looking into databases, and that i am essentially clueless...

The Bluehost knowledgebase (http://helpdesk.bluehost.com/kb/index.php?x=&mod_id=2) is a good place to start.
