I know wordpress is coming out with a new, better and faster version. I need to know how to update to it. I am using a theme that is not the standard theme and various plugins.

The upgrade link in my account states that I can only click if I have not modified my them or plugins.

Does this mean that I only need to change my theme back to the standard wordpress theme and disable all plugins and the upgrade will be safe to do.

Please let me know how I can do this in a safe manner without jacking up my site.

I had previously upgraded my WP installation several times through Fantastico without any interruption to my themes or plug-ins. That being said, you may want to consider going instead with the option of a manual installation just to be safe. It isn't really that difficult; you simply upload and overwrite the program files on your account and run the upgrade program. Wordpress.org gives you all the details on how to do that.

Hello

Here is procedure what i use but first here is what i have

1) i have working version of wordpress 2.3.3 on my server ( old one )
2) i have plugins what i use in my WP 2.3.3
3) and i have theme which i use in WP 2.3.3

on wordpress site you have instructions how to upgrade and it's very simple
but here is what i done in my case

1) BACKUP ALL YOUR WORDPRESS FILES AND DATABASE - this is needed if you don't have experience with upgrading and it's recommended ( better safe than sorry latter )

2) i upgraded all my plugins to new version if they are off date ( only which i use but you can upgrade all what you have installed ) after that preceed to step 3)

3) after 2) step is done i start to upload new files ( currently i use WP 2.5 ) and that is all when you upload your fresh new WP2.5

4) after that go to your wordpress with this link http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php where www.yourdomain.com is your domain and then you complete upgrade process

as you can notice i didn't turn off all my plugins ( which is recommended by wordpress instruction for upgrade ) and you may done this before you start upload files or step 3)

that is all
if you need more info let me know

regards

FYI, I did go with the upgrade recently and enjoyed a relatively smooth transition. Even so, I would check wordpress.org to ensure that your plug-ins are compatible with the latest version. Also, as it's pointed out in other discussions, it's always a good idea to backup your wp-contents folder.

The simplest way to upgrade WordPress is:

1. Install the automatic upgrade plugin from http://techie-buzz.com/wordpress-plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade-plugin.html
2. Activate the plugin
3. Run the upgrade option that the plugin adds to the menu.
4. Wait for WordPress to introduce another upgrade and then repeat step 3.

The automatic upgrade plugin will automatically take backups of everything in the database and wp-content folder as part of the automated process.
