Alright, so I was granted access to SSH. Great. I made a key. Private and public. Ok. Now I downloaded the private key, that's right, right? I tried the SSHTerm program in cpanel. It wants a .pub file, so I get the .pub file off my account. It says that the format is not a supported format. Ok, apparently Bluehost doesn't support their own key. No problem, I'll just login. But what is my username? I don't recall ever being given an SSH username. I'll try my cpanel login. Nope. I'll try my FTP login. Nope.

So I try putty. I get the ppk file for my key. Asks for a login. Great. Don't have one. It then says Server didn't accept our key. Wonderful.

What am I missing? The documentation on how to get up and running on SSH is less than great. I have no idea what login name I'm supposed to even be using...

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have no clue what you are doing but I use SSH all of the time here on BlueHost via putty.

Be sure to use preferred SSH protocol "2" and your login name is the first 8 letters of your account address. e.g. mysite.com would be "mysiteco"

Your password is what you'd use to get into cpanel.

I finally figured it out. Yeah, the first 8 letters was weird. Mine ended up with a "1" at the end of the username. Bizarre.

Your username for your account at BlueHost is the first 8 charaters of the main domain name unless that is already used by someone else in which case they will substitute a number for the last character.
