Hi, I've used Fantastico deluxe to install WordPress -- it's great because it's so easy. But Fantastico doesn't yet have the most current version of WordPress, ver. 2.5, apparently a fairly significant upgrade. When will Fantastico have the latest version?
Thanks

At this point, I would say it's unlikely that Fantastico will be updated any time soon. It appears that it's being phased out on BH in favor of SimpleScripts. One of the ongoing problems with Fantastico was that they were very, very slow to introduce new versions of things like WordPress.

Unless you tweaked Wordpress' code to death, you're probably gonna be able to upgrade it to 2.5 easily even though its been installed with Fantastico.
Make a backup of your blog and database and use the procedure found here:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress
Basically, what you have to do is:
Delete wp-admin and wp-includes from your Wordpress directory
Upload Wordpress 2.5 to your hosting account, overwriting all existing files
Visit http://www.yourwebsite/wp-admin/upgrade.php
Et voila!
:)
And don't forget to backup your website before upgrading!

Well, I've just backed up using both the Bluehost backup wizard, and a Worpress backup plugin. But I have to say the backup files seem very small and can't possibly include all the material on my weblog.
It doesn't seem right, and in the circumstances, I dare not proceed.
What do I do next to convince myself all is well please?
Thanks,
Gav

The way I would run a backup so as to know that I have backed up everything necessary is to go into the database via phpMyAdmin and use the export option to write a complete copy of the database content into a file on my computer that can be restored back using the import option. I would also manually copy the wp-content folder in its entirety using FTP.

Well... I've had a go at downloading the SQL file, but I'm far from sure I'm safe, not least because I've actually got two Wordpress weblogs in my Bluehost space - and I'd guess they'll have two sql files.
Also, the moment I fired up my ftp software the sql export stopped. I suppose that wasn't the most sensible thing I could have done...
I feel like I'm lost in space!

My anxiety may seem surprising, but it's due to not knowing what I'm doing and having a LOT of content - 500 posts, and getting on for 3000 files in my content folder. And that's just http://intheboatshed.net. there's a pile more in http://kentgathering.com.

I lied. I've had one failed transfer (who knows which?!?) and 12,000 files yet to come. This is terrifying!

AND it's going to run half the night, even with my reasonably quick broadband. Hey ho...

And now the connection is broken and I have to start again. Boo hoo...

It is my understanding that Fantastico does have a 2.5 script upgrade.
I have posted a ticket with Bluehost.

I did that some days ago. The answer I got was that they didn't know when it would be updated or whether it would be 'because of the scale of the job'.
My backup is still running.

Well I backed up my files, and installed 2.5 just as I was told to by the WordPress instructions and forumites.
And now, just as I feared, it's all looking hopeless. See http://intheboatshed.net.
If anyone can offer any help, I will be grateful but right now I feel like I'm trying to build a railway line with spaghetti!

You're site looks okay to me so I'm assuming you got things straightened out. I can assure you that the "WP Database Backup" plugin backs up your entire DB. I've used it successfully to restore my databases a few times over the past 2-1/2 years. It doesn't back up any of your install though, (like images, plugins, themes and such) just the DB and the DB has all your posts, comments, tags, categories etc. Mine usually runs about 1.1 megs and that's after 2-1/2 years of posts.
Upgrading is actually very easy even just using the plugin above to back things up and FTP to handle the upgrade itself. I've helped a lot of do-it-yourself WordPress bloggers in your position so if you have any questions at all, please use my contact page to get a hold of me at my website; Just Thinkin' (http://just-thinkin.net). I don't charge anything. I had help from seasoned WP bloggers when I had questions so I believe in passing on the favor. :D
the comment in the thread below is the easiest way...i actually broke my site following the instructions above :(
