View Full Version : Wget - Not possible?

So I'm trying to copy over my 13 gig server from Dreamhost to setup here. However, I obviously don't want to download and then re-upload the entire 13 gigs. I thought wget would work best, but I can't connect to the server using that method. It hangs up at the connecting process.

After about 7 emails with support, I'm told you have to have a dedicated IP to use the wget tool, which honestly blows my mind. Is this the case for everyone? How do people transfer large domains generally? Can anyone suggest an alternative solution to this problem?

The dedicated IP is only $3 per month and worth it for many other reasons but as for the wget thang you don't "need" a dedicated IP to use it ... just to avoid the cut off time. Can you break up that 13 Gb and copy things over in pieces? The largest single file I had to transfer was about 120mb and wget worked fine and I didn't even think about needing a dedicated IP at the time. :)

See, I don't even get to the point where it starts the transfer. It literally won't even connect. They said this was due to the firewall settings and it was the reason you needed a dedicated IP. Meanwhile, I'm was able to transfer from a http site just fine, but my ftp site just hangs on the connect stage.

I was thinking that sites had to be whitelisted or something to be able to open an outgoing connection. But I guess even that isn't possible/necessary.

Maybe you could try using sftp (SSH).

man sftp

Nope. Looks like bluehost blocks all outgoing ftp connections, including wget and sftp. And scp.

If so, that must be a recent change. Outgoing FTP has always been blocked, but wget via SSH used to be the recommended tool.

Outgoing FTP was working 6 months ago. They have since disabled it for incoming and outgoing connections. There is no practical reason why one has to have a dedicated ip for wget.

Is is another way to get money either through a dedicated ip address or for their other company that they started which handles site moves.
