View Full Version : Photo gallery suggestions?

I'm hosting a wiki that's becoming relatively image heavy. While users can attach files to individual pages, the process in the wiki is sub-optimal (e.g., images have to be resized prior to uploading and can only be uploaded one at a time).

What I'd like to be able to do is have a photo gallery to which users can upload high-resolution copies of images and then link to automatically-generated low-resolution copies for web display. The ability to tag and organize images (ala Flickr) would also be very useful, as would the ability to restrict user uploads via .htaccess / .htpasswd files.

Anyone have suggestions for software I could use here on Bluehost to do this? Thanks!

Fantastico has three image gallery options, "Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/)" should work best for you.

I like coppermine's gallery....it's very adaptable to whatever your interface is. :)

ive tried both coppermine and 4 images
currently i have using 4 images, the onyl downside to 4images is the creators are based in like denmark so their site is geared more for the denmark speaking people instead of english.

Thanks for the suggestions! I just installed gallery, and it looks like it does everything I need (except draw logins from a .htpasswd file, but I guess you can't have everything).

I love the menalto Gallery, been using it for years and it was my main want when looking for a new host last year. The new version takes a bit of getting used to if you are stuck in your ways like me LOL. I'm not so keen on their new permissions system for users but once you get used to it, it's ok.

My only major ick was that it when I tried uploading a tiff it gave a link to download the unmarked images which it doesn't do with Jpegs and so far I haven't had time to look for a way to stop that.

Other than that Menalto is great :)

It looks like gallery can do movies; I haven't tried movies yet, but gallery's features page (http://gallery.menalto.com/features) says that it can handle them. The FAQ has instructions (http://codex.gallery2.org/index.php/Gallery2:FAQ#Movies_are_not_playing_in_my_Gallery. 2C_why.3F) on how to get around a problem with movies being displayed in IE.
