I've used Fantastico to install simple machines forum, and would like to use Simple Scripts. It's not listed as an option. Is there a chance it will be added at some point?

This is a user-to-user forum, so we don't have any inside information. You need to ask BH directly.

Maybe you could give a shot at installing it yourself. I have never installed by myself a forum software (learning slowly the ropes of hosting but totally unfamiliar and inexperienced with HTML or php scripts or whatever is used in web hosting) but based on what I saw in the SMF installating guide, it seemed fairly simple to me.

Good luck

For just about all the scripts that can be installed via Fantastico or SimpleScripts which then have complications when you want to upgrade, move, or remove the script the manual install alternative consists of the following steps.

1. Download the script from the author's site to your computer.
2. Upload the script to your hosting where you want it.
3. If you don't already have a database defined then create one. If you do then you need the database name, user name and password.
4. Run the install script as described in the documentation that came with the script.

All that Fantastico and SimpleScripts do is to automate this process (in the case of Fantastico it always creates a new database rather than allowing you to use an existing one). They also log what you have done so that they can automate the update process provided that the updated version has been made available via their service which complicates things if you want to upgrade before they make the upgrade available.

Thanks Felgall

a) In 2 above, does one have to unzip or untar (Do not know really what tar files are--just assuming they are sort of a zipped file) the file before it gets uploaded ? I presume the answer must be yes since the install script must be inside the zipped file. If not, how do you get to the install scrip ?

b) Assuming the answer is yes to my first question, once all the files have been uploaded in your selected directory, how do you get the install script started ? I mean is it like a PC where where you just double click the setup.exe file and the installation process gets started ?

c)When you install a file manually ie: not through simplescrips or Fantastico, is there always an uninstall file provided in order to remove the application should you no longer want it ? If not, how would one uninstall it ?

I am asking a lot of questions but I want to learn. I hope you do not mind an inquisitive mind pestering you folks quite frequently. I am 60 years old and have the desire to learn web hosting with the eagerness of a teenager:)

Thank you Felgall for your frequent interventions and to all of you folks, including the moderators who also are of tremendous help. I realize that some of you guys are quite knowledgeable and I praise you all for your great desire to teach us guys who happened to be much less learned than you in the field of web hosting.

I have to admit that the reading of some posts on this forum leave me totally overwhelmed and give me the impression that I am trying to learn the language of a foreign planet. I only get bits and pieces here and there in my reading of those posts but I keep reading still. I want to learn and at times, I feel like throwing in the towell. But I am not that kind of guy. After a good night sleep, I keep coming back to the Bluehost forum to benefit from your expertise. I will never thank you enough folks.

Thank you a million times !!!!!!!

can either unzip the files before you upload them OR upload the zip file and then unzip it. The first way is easier, the second way can be faster.

Running the install script once it is uploaded is just a matter of visiting the appropriate page in your browser.
