Hi,
I know Im new here.. Just registered on this forum. Im looking for a new host. I am currently running vbulletin software. I have over 2700 registered users, and the highest number of users online at one time was 181. With my current host, I am running into database errors and timeouts.

I chatted online with a bluehost rep, using the chat function on your main page. Was told that vbulletin was likely too resource intensive for your hosting plans. However, I see y'all are running it here.

I would like to run vbulletin and would like to move my website and host with bluehost. However, I would like to know it would function properly and won't result in slow responses and timeouts as I am currently.

Im assuming since y'all are running vbulletin here, that you're aware of the resources necessary, and can tell me if I can be successful hosting with bluehost.

Your help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Mike

I would have to disagree. This site is run on a dedicated server, it is not on a standard Bluehost account. :)

You'll probably be fine with vBulletin if you have a small number of users and under 50 users online at a time. But with ~2700 users and over 150 online at a time, I would be surprised if you didn't experience slow performance. Eventually I bet it would get to a point where you're getting too many timeouts or you recieve CPU Quota Exceeded errors.

You could try, but unfortunately I think it would be too slow for your liking. Like any shared host, Bluehost hosts hundreds of sites and each server, and they all have to share resources and CPU time.

You'll most likely need a VPS if you want your forum to run blazing fast. :)

Just my opinion. :)

They don't sell dedicated servers, but of course they have a couple that they use. ;)

Although I can't absolutely confirm the information, I was told about a week or two back that it was run on a Xen box with dedicated resources - I assume it's managed by Bluehost. I asked how the person knew, but everbody just seemed to go with it. :D

But with the performance we are all seeing, it is definitely not hosted on a standard account. ;)

Sorry to revive an old thread but I am running vbulletin with 16,000+ members and over 50 online at a time and am experiencing errors such a cpu quota exceeded etc. Does this mean I am ggoing to have to get a dedicated server or something?

That sounds like you have sufficient usage to need at least a virtual server (where you are only sharing a server with 4 or 5 others) instead of a shared service where you are sharing the server with about 450 others.

You could try upgrading to a high CPU quota plan, but I doubt that will do much for a forum with your amount of usage.

As felgall said, you will most likely need a VPS. :)

You could try upgrading to a high CPU quota plan....
I'm not even sure BH still offers this, since they increased the regular CPU quota. I think they figured out that if someone has lousy scripts or non-indexed databases, giving them twice as much CPU wasn't really going to solve the problem.
