View Full Version : Mangled email "To:" line

A friend has my email address in an list entry in her address book that correctly gets delivered to me, but the "To:" line in the header always gets mangled. It's very consistent.
I think it must be the BlueHost POP server that's mangling it, otherwise it wouldn't get delivered. But it's very odd because it's the ONLY case of such mangling I ever receive. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?
This is the header in the email I receive (substituting the group name of course):
To: <"Group Name"@box117.bluehost.com>
I don't think it's being mangled at my end. I fetch the email with Fetchmail (http://www.fetchmail.info/), which adds headers but doesn't modify any. And my email application receives it locally, so it doesn't know anything about bluehost.

Explain what you mean by "mangled." Do you mean that it's being changed to whatever@box117.bluehost.com? Are you sure that the email account she is sending to actually exists in your cPanel? The default email account actually can't be used for email, you need to create another, different one.
Then use something like this (http://www.sendanonymousemail.net/) and send yourself an email, see if the headers get "mangled" as you describe. :)

The "To:" line that I posted above is exactly what is in the email header (except for the part in quotes).
AFAIK it is impossible to deliver email to me at any address at bluehost.com. And I'm pretty sure the address in her list is my normal address at my domain hosted by bluehost.
If the address doesn't exist, how is it being delivered? The default address is turned off. The email *IS* being delivered with the mangled header.

The email *IS* being delivered with the mangled header.
So you tried the link that I posted and the headers are still getting changed? If so, you'll probably have to contact Bluehost through Live Chat or Phone to resolve this. :)

No. I tried your link, but it didn't get delivered.
But I get email from hundreds of sources. Many of them desired, some of them spam. But only ONE source results in a mangled header line. I don't understand the confusion with what's happening.
No one else said they have seen the problem, so maybe no one else is affected. That answers my original question, but doesn't help.

But only ONE source results in a mangled header line.
Then the cause of the problem is most likely somewhere between the original sender and the Bluehost mail server, which is out of your control. If the original sender sends it to youremail@example.com and the Bluehost mail server isn't changing headers for the rest of your email, then it's got to be at some hop along the way. It's definitely odd, but I don't think there is much you can do.
You could contact Bluehost, but they'll probably tell you that it's not happening on their end. :)
