View Full Version : FTP Upload keeps timing out

First, let me say that overall both my son and I are quite happy with BlueHost and what is offered in their package. I have only one rather large complaint, which is that when uploading files I keep getting an 'timed out' error message, which means I am stuck at the computer babysitting the upload. I have looked through the help section and tried uploading with the firewalls down with no success. My son has the same problem so I know it is not just something I'm doing. Besides, I don't have the problem uploading to another host.
Any help is appreciated because it really is quite annoying.http://www.bluehostforum.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

I too have experienced this. I find that using the uploader in the control panel removes this issue altogether.
the link is something like this (if you can't find it in the 'new layout')
[your websites ipaddress]:2082/frontend/bluehost/files/index.html
so for example:
http://1.2.3.4:2082/frontend/bluehost/files/index.html
the only problem with this is it can be quite time consuming if you have many files to upload. In such an instance, I'd go ahead and make a PHP file to upload a zip file and then extract it; but I have yet to need to do so, and doing so would require php experience.

First, thank you for the input. I always appreciate someone who takes the time to help.
Your solution works fine with a program like DreamWeaver that creates individual files. But I use a program called Web9, which I absolutely love BTW, that is a java based web generator so while it creates html pages, it uses a number of files to do so.
It may be the timeouts are something I have to live with in which case, oh well, there is always something to do on the computer while I'm babysitting the upload.

still, would not the output be as numerous files; that would be what the client views through the browser.
I tried searching for web9 without any success, so I could not find out how it works, perhaps if you explain it further?

You could archive, upload and extract the files on the server.

Except.. you don't need a php script..

...when uploading files I keep getting an 'timed out' error message
There is a small bug with one of the anti-DoS pieces on many of the bluehost customer servers. As far as we can tell, it only involves some customers, but we have been having a hard time pinning it to a specific set of circumstances. Basically, a small percentage of customers, while uploading large files, are getting tagged as a Denial of Service attack.
We have a workaround which *may* solve this issue for you. If it is the same issue. Which it may or may not be. (enough caveats?) Right now, I only have it on a few of the servers in order to make sure it doesn't cause any issues that we may not have found while testing. On Tuesday, I will roll it out to the rest of the servers (barring any issues).
Try the uploads again after Tuesday's workday. If you still have an issue, report it to the support guys.

I just wanted to post an alternative that I use to manually ftp'ing files. If you are using XP, you can use NetDrive (free) which essentially maps your bluehost directory to a virtual drive. I use various editing programs and read and write directly to my account. I haven't noticed performance issues yet with php/python editing.

It took some doing, but I was finally able to upload the files by using the FTP drag and drop tool on BlueHost. To get around the timeout/permission denied I copied the files in chunks, which worked.
Solarnexus: the website address for the Web9 program is http://www.serif.com/webplus/webplus9/index.asp. There may or may not be enough info for you to figure out how the program works. As an end user what I get is a draw program where images and text can be placed anywhere on the page without tables. The program has some limitations like not facilitating browser sizing, but overall it is really powerful and a joy to work with for a relative amateur who has used a number of other programs including DreamWeaver.
Alligosh: I will indeed try uploading again on Tuesday afternoon as it would seem I fall into that small percetage mentioned.
Thanks for the input everyone! Aren't forums wonderful?!!

I bumped into a Joomla install and it exasperated me. I've digged in the Web for a while and got two (commercial!) solutions, ZipDeploy ($10 full, windoze) and Yummy FTP ($25,Macintosh).
What I did, I managed to use Zipdeploy but I was stingy:mad: and bought only a $5, site-limited license; now I'm using it on 5 of my websites but I'd need more... and don't want to buy another full license!
So does anybody know something alike?
The links:
Windows: http://ftp-unzip.com/ZipDeploy/ (http://ftp-unzip.com/ZipDeploy/about-zipdeploy/features/zipdeploy---a-ftp-with-unzip-option-client)

Hello everyone,
The title sums it up. LOL Just starting out with BH and although a 1mb upload takes 5 minutes, it goes through. I thought ZipDeploy sounded great. The problem is, it "Times Out" in less than a minute. No rest for the weary, I guess.
I also get this jumble. Anyone else?
