htaccess manager recommendations?

Hi Folks-

I'm looking for a utility to manage access to directories, a bit more sophisticated than the one included in cpanel. I'd like to password protect multiple directories and manage both users and groups of users access at a directory level. Ideally, a user would log in and (based on credentials) be automatically directed to a list of the appropriate files or folders.

I see lots of utilities to do this, though some may not be compatible with a hosted environment where we can't make changes to the apache configs. Yes, I know a CMS can do what I want, but it seems like overkill...suspect I really just want a utility that can build and maintain .htaccess and .htpassword files.

Any suggestions from others who might have looked for something similar?
