My previous thread did not make sense after parsing, so will try again.

I have a website from which I have arranged for statistics to be gathered via Awstats and Webalyzer options.
My query is why do they show differing figures for the same period of assessment, ie:September 2008
Awstats / Webalyser
Unique visitors 301 / not recorded
Number of visits 401 / 692
Pages 979 / 1357
Hits 9075 / 11493
Bandwidth 269.50 MB / not recorded
Can anyone tell me the reason for the wide variation in these statistics ?
Cheers, Peterver.

Have you set up a 301 redirect for your website?

(meaning regardless of whether a visitor types in yoursite.com or www.yoursite.com, they still end up at www.yoursite.com)

Thank for the reply Showtym3. I have no idea what a 301 is or what it does.
Cheers Peterver

The two programs analyse the same log file but look at different things and so end up with different results. Each is using slightly different but equally valid criteria for determining what to include in which counts. One reason why Awstats produces lower results than Webalizer is that awstats attempts to identify and remove spiders from the results.
