I am finding that I do a lot of multi-tab web browsing these days and want to adapt my desktop so that it will be faster. I have a 2.8 ghz p4 with 512 mb of ram. the motherboard is not a special board - the memory speed is probably pretty slow. The video card has 64 mb of ram.

I often have 3 or 4 windows open with FF, and has as many as 30 tabs open in each window. Needless to say, the system is not very responsive. Although pages come up pretty quickly when I want to jump from one tab to another things are pretty sluggish.

Which part of this system is the bottleneck? I seldom surf pages that have animation or flash, etc

One word: RAM. Add another 1GB.

Video card will probably only become a bottleneck if you're playing fully graphical, 3-d games

So, definitely add another vote for 1 gig of RAM. Even another 500meg would speed you up, and in the meantime you can go to the task manager and probably even find a few programs you can disable to free up memory.
