hello,

I have a WordPress blog that has recently (within the last 4 days) come under the interest of a spammer. It's ridiculous...everytime I log into WordPress there are literally a hundred or so comments all from the same IP, all spam trying to sell prescription drugs, and I'm wondering if I can block the user from my site. I have his IP and even his email, which the user provides to leave a comment on the blog, is it possible to block him/her/the bot?

He spams my comments so I've made it that all comments are now moderated, but, I'd rather just block this guy. Any tips would be appreciated!

Cheers,

yes you can do a site-wide IP block from the control panel.

since my site is down right now i cant tell you the exact name of that feature :D

That's awesome. Good news. Once the servers are back up and running I'm going to block this *******. Thanks...yeah, seeing as the sites are down right now I can't access the control panel either. Strangely enough...my site is up and running just fine.

Thanks for taking the time to reply

The IP address block won't block them from coming back again and again. I would suggest adding the Spam Karma plugin. http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/

What'd happen if I just keep on deleting the spam and ignore it? Think it'd just go away at some point? Is it even a person that's doing the spamming or is it some kind of computer program you think?

Cheers

Uhm...probably not a real person putting it there. My Spam Karma eats about 100 spams a day that I don't have to delete....of course, there are sometimes one or two that sneak in, but those go into moderation and I just delete them as spam.

I think it would if they are using the same IP address.

I concede most spammers dont.

Well this spammer has been using the same IP address for every comment he's made. Same email too. I'll block it and see what happens. The tenacity and sheer amount of spam comments he's inundating my inbox with is incredible. A couple hundred a day.

Now - if my audience was into generic viagra and cheap second mortgages that'd be one thing...

You could do that, too...but it doesn't mean that other spammers aren't right behind. ;)
