transfer registration

I transferred my host domain to bluehost and I have changed the DNS already, so, now I'm wondering if it's needed to transfer the registration of the domain, or I can remain it on the old registrant, with my other domains.
In the case to be recommended to do the transfer, I need the EPP code from the old registrant, but this domain expires this month, so.. can I wait to the expiration date and later get the free domain offered from the bluehost account for register this domain?
If the answer is yes, I will lose the files on the bluehost account, when the domain will expire?

The domain registration is completely separate from the hosting so there is no need to move the domain if you are happy with your current registrar.
