Username that I am running my server on

Wondering if anyone could help or advise what username my shared server would be running under. I need to know for upload of files security ect. The following code that normally works just displays absolutely nothing.

echo `echo \$USER`;

I have raised concerns regarding shared server security raised in another forum. I take it by the server running under dedicated usernames that other users on the same server as me do not have any kind of rights to my files or folders.
