A few quick questions:

Should I have an empty folder (no shtml, htaccess files, etc.) and upload all the Joomla files there?

Also, drag & drop doesn't seem to work with firefox. Am I missing something?

Thanks!

You shouldn't have any problems if you install Joomla to a new folder. For instance, mysite.com/joomla

I have noticed in the past that uploading a working CMS on localhost to Bluehost there is somewhat of a problem with FTP. Sometimes it disconnects on large uploads.

Two ways to get around this:

1. Find a better FTP program that will continue to reconnect and remember where the transfer was interrupted. (Dreamweaver MX will do this I think.)

2. If you are experiencing problems uploading a 200 meg site, try uploading folders seperately. Sometimes this tactic works well, as you may think everything is there in a bulk upload, but get several php errors when using the site. That's because the FTP was interrupted on upload. Seen it happen with a large shopping cart that worked fine on localhost.

Thanks!

But forgot to add - it's an addon site I'll be uploading joomla too.

So public_html/newsitefolder. Do I need any specific files in the root directory of the addon site? htaccess for example? Or does the joomla folder(s) have everything I need?

unzip and Upload everything.
to be sure you have uploaded all files, use filezilla or another ftp that queues and resumes and will let you know if something didn't go on correctly.
It is really important to be sure they are all there.

Then use your installation file in joomla. It has everything you need to get started.
You will need to tell it where your database is and the name of it and your password.
So if you don't have a database use your MySQL section of your bluehost control panel to set one up.
First set up a database then a user in that database.
A note...bluehost seems to add your username on the front of the database name...so don't forget that part when setting up joomla.
After you've answered some basic questions in the set up you are installed.
You made need to change a few permissions on some fo the files but I didn't experience that on Bluehost
The browser may adamantly tell you to delete the install file before you can get started.
Read your docs for info on the default password etc. to get into the admin.
