Get the latest verison thur PHPBB site. Download it to your computer, unzip, then FTP the contents. Then just find the install.php and call it up in your browser and follow the directions for setting up your database. Once done, then delete that file and one other and your good to go. Should be able to be done in less then 2 mins. Just follow the directions. It's real easy.

If you run a "stock" phpBB, it's as easy as described. However, many phpBB installations have a few or many "mods" installed. Mine has 20 or more mods installed, adding capabilities that I need/want (e.g. attachments, subscriptions, digests, SEO enhancements, etc.). In such a case, upgrading to the latest release is more tedious but still not too difficult. Of course, if you're not comfortable editing PHP code it wouldn't be particularly easy. In that case, however, it's unlikely that you've installed any mods.

Oh yea good point, I forgot about that. If you board isn't stock you are going to need to back up. Of course some of the upgrades consist of just a few new files with logic changes. Most of the times you can just upload the changes. Just make sure you haven't edited any of those files that are been replace. If so you are going to need to back those up and add the code changes from the mod to the new files.

If it's stock then you can just back up your DB and upload the new files

Heck I am running 2.0.13. and the newest to date is 2.0.21. I have over 50+ mods installed plus custom design and I really don't care to spend much time upgrading because I will have to spend weeks setting it up. If it ain't broke don't fix it if, that's what I say.

Well, actually, it is broke. A number of security holes have been fixed since 2.0.13. You may be comfortable with the level of risk involved but you are, nevertheless, at risk.

That's an easy fix. I am running CTRACKER for PHPBB. elminates all hacking attempts and threats.

IMO, if someone really wants to hack it they will. I have no problems with it so until it actually happens I am not going to worry about it to much. On my board it would be more of a hassel to upgrade it then if I was to get hacked. Reason being is I am running PHPBB Plus with a custom create template that I built. It would take easily over a month to upgrade it which is time I really don't have right now.

Look into CTRACKER it's great. Like a firewall for forum boards.
