Domain names are licensed for at least one year at a time, no matter where you register them. That's the ICANN rule - it's not a BH thing. A registrar can offer a longer registration period, if they choose to. If you let it expire, someone else can grab it (I think you have 30 days after it expires to rescue it). Most registrars will email you a warning when your domain is about to expire.

It depends on the top level domain as to how long you can licence your particular lower leve domain within that top domain for each time you renew. The only actual domains that are sold rather than licenced are new top level domains - if you have a few hundred million dollars to spare you might be able to purchase one, they sell in that sort of price range well beyond what most people could afford.
.com can be licenced for any whole number of years between 1 and 10 (.au can only be licenced for 2 years at a time).
You can renew the domain well in advance of it expiring. If you transfer the domain to a different registrar (which you can do at any time except in the first 60 days after the last time) then all the remaining time goes with it, they'll just require that you renew for a further period on the end so that they make some money from it.
