I host several domains on my hosting account.
There is some cross linking with other sites, so I plan on getting a dedicated IP.
Since there may be some crosslinking between some of my BH sites, I'm considering getting additional BH hosting accounts with dedicated IP's.

My questions is how "random" are the ip addresses as far as the search engines are concerned?

They would all obviously come from the block of IP addresses allocated to BlueHost.

Do the SE's prefer from different blocks, or are different addresses enough?

Search engines don't even care if it is the same address - there are many times the number of web sites that there are IP addresses and most sites are on shared hosting where there are possibly hundreds of completely unrelated sites sharing the same IP address.

What is the advantage of having a dedicated IP address? And if you buy one how would you ensure that you are the only one using it?

You need a dedicated IP if you want to have non-standard ports open or you want to install your own security certificate.

This is a question that i've often wondered also. But, shouldn't there be some kind of IP conflict if others are using it also. http://imagepot.info/img/502/w08q1028hnzf/biggrin.gif

The security certificate attaches the IP address to your domain. If anyone tries to use it for a different domain (even just adding or removing www on the front) would cause the browser to alert that the domain doesn't match the certificate.

If you were using it to enable normally disabled ports for some special processing on your site then worst case would be if someone else on the same server were running the same processing and used your IP to provide them with access instead of getting their own. That would require that they know that your site is on the same server and is using that particular IP address to adjust the firewall settings for that particular port. Their chances of winning first prize in the lottery are better than their chance of obtaining that info.

If you buy one you can have it set with a username and password and set it in your browser. This will allow you to be the only one to access, unless someone hacks into your ip's user and pass which is highly unlikely. http://www.image-jump.com/image/Q/8.gif

You don't need a dedicated IP to do that. You can set that up on any folder at any time either by updating the .htaccess file yourself or using the option in cPanel that does it for you. I have several folders on my account set up like that without a dedicated IP.

The only two uses for a dedicated IP are those I already mentioned. Anything else can be done without it.
