I am running oscommerce with my web site, it can be a challenge at times. The two links are a good advice to figure out if you want a shared SSL or if you want to purchase one.

I purchased a SSL through BlueHost, which also comes with a stationary IP-Adress.

In any event you will have to edit your two configure.php files.

catalog/includes/configure.php and

catalog/admin/includes/configure.php

If you downloaded oscommerce with fantastico the sharded SSL should already be in your files.

The hosting accounts come with shared SSL...
The usual URL for using SSL is:
https://secure.bluehost.com/~yourunixusername/

Shared SSL is adequate for use on eCommerce sites.
