I would like to change from /index of to a message of my choice. how is that done? (on a standard apache download page)

You're on a shared server, so you can't alter Apache. Your only choices for an index page are shown under Control Panel, Index Manager. For a given directory, you can have no indexing, simple indexing (filename), or "fancy" indexing (filename and description). But that's it.

You could, of course, create your own index.html that displayed the files in some other format, but making it dynamic would be tricky.
