I have wordpress installed using fantastico and was going to update wordpress using simplescripts. Will using simplescripts overwrite my original install and delete my customizations I have done?

Previously using fantastico my customizations were kept. (sidebar, header, stuff like that).

I traveled down the simplescript path and it looks like it is installing wordpress for the first time.

I was coming to post the exact same question ebacchus just did--if we originally installed wordpress using fantastico, are we safe installing updates through simplescript?

I'm really happy about simplescripts. I have the same question, though, it looks like simplescripts does a completely new install of wordpress. Gave a message that it would delete x# of files, etc. I'd really like to have the latest release of WP. Fantastico just gave us the previous release to 2.5 a short time ago. We won't be seeing the one that came out today for quite awhile! Please advise, and thanks.

Simplescripts contains versions 2.3.1 onwards.

Provided that your Fantastico install is one of those you could switch by carrying out the following steps.

1. Take a backup of the database.
2. Uninstall from Fantastico
3. Install the same version from Simple Scripts
4. Restore back your data from the backup
5. Upgrade via Simple Scripts to the latest version.

What about all the plugins and etc that are installed? Backing up the DB will only back the content up but I'm assuming we have to backup the plugins folder, etc, as well?

Additionally, doesn't seem as simple as this since Fantastico uses a "WP_" prefix on all the wordpress tables, but for SimpleScripts it doesn't. So you have to dump the data and edit the backup before reimporting. Ugh.

If you have plugins and a theme installed then back up and restore the wp-content folder as well as the database.

I still have some questions from your list. See my comments in bold italics.

I assume we need to also do the content folder since most of us have themes and plugins, right?
2. Uninstall from Fantastico
Uninstall the database or the entire wordpress version?
3. Install the same version from Simple Scripts
4. Restore back your data from the backup
Just the Database? Or also the content folder?
5. Upgrade via Simple Scripts to the latest version.

Also,

I talked with support using the Chat, and they told me to just upgrade using simple scripts and everything will transfer over.

I didn't trust or believe this response.

I originally installed wordpress with Fantastico and have not customized my blog. I just updated it with the new Scripts. How do I customize my blog with new theme and banners. I want to offer Teleseminars and affiliate links. I don’t see any options on the cpanel for this.
