Hi
Has anyone got any idea if there are plans to provide an automated conversion of fantastico installations of moodle to simplescripts in cpanel?

You'd have to ask BH about that. We're just other users, so we don't know any more than you do. Give them a call!

As BlueHost own SimpleScripts they may be able to answer the question about whether it will be added there.
To find out if there are plans to add it to Fantastico you'd need to ask Netenberg as they are the ones who own Fantastico.

It only reason why SimpleScripts is created on top of Fantastico is because Fantastico is slower on producing the most updated versions of the scripts. So BlueHost decided to create SimpleScripts that contains the newest version of scripts once it is available. And they have only chosen the most popular scripts like WordPress and Joomla into SimpleScripts. Moodle is not included because it is not in the hot list. Currently Fantastico is using v1.9.3 of Moodle while the newest version available on Moodle.org (http://moodle.org) is v1.9.5. There won't be big differences in terms of functionality (changes in the last number 1.9.[x]).

So you need to check carefully what is included in those two releases. If there are patches for any security holes then installing the Fantastico version with known security holes in it is just asking for trouble. The point releases are usually security patches and are therefore more essential to keep up to date on than the whole number releases that change the functionality.

Thanks guys,
Unfortunately Bluehost were not able to tell me if this will happen in the future. :-(
I currently run a growing moodle site and obviously want to keep it up to date. Fantastico is too slow with the updates so hopefully Simplescripts will come up with a conversion tool as they do have the latest version of Moodle available for new installations already.
If not, i'll have to find a way of moving my current fantastico install to a self build install which sounds like a lot of work...

After you do it once, it will be easy. :D

I have found that for most scripts a self built is a far simpler install option than either Fantastico or SimpleScripts. It does require entering a few more pieces of info during the install (plus you need to copy the files) but it means that you know exactly how it is set up for if you have problems afterwards which makes getting help much easier.

I think I'll eventually go down the self built route. The problem at the moment is that I have a lot of content in my site and the fantastico created databases do not migrate easily due to character set issues.
I've holidays coming up so I think i'll give it a go then...wish me luck!

Wakakakakak, Moodle is now in SimpleScripts with the newest version! Wakakakakaka.

Thumbs up SimpleScripts!
p/s I research on simplescripts and found out it is not developed by BH. It is developed by a 3rd party company who then sell the license to web host. So we will be seeing more web hosts using SimpleScripts in the future.

That third party company is a subsidiary of BlueHost - SimpleScripts was effectively developed by BlueHost and is marketed as a third party scripting option so that other web hosts can also offer it (by paying a fee to BlueHost for its use).

No wonder!
