I looked at the tutorial on setting up the ftp in Dreamweaver CS4, followed all of the steps but keep getting an error message that the remote host can not be found. Any other user of Dreamweaver CS4 that has successfully set up the ftp and willing to give me a hand?

This is from a setup that I have, and it just works.

Access: ftp

FTP host: ftp.example.com

Host directory: /www/ (Although it could be /public_html/ )

Login: your_cpanel_username

Password: your_cpanel_password

Checked items -> Use passive ftp

And checked -> Maintain synchronization information

Hope this helps

What is the error message specifically?

First of all when I try to use the host name format ftp.example.com it gives a long 10 - 12 line error message with several suggestions as to why it may not be accepted. When I use the recommended bluehost format ftp://username@domain.net the error message is: remote host can not be found.
Would my firewall have anything to do with this problem?

Thanks for taking a look into this and offering your assistance.

Yes, a firewall could be blocking this. Try turning it off and see what happens. If you are using a third party firewall in addition to the MS firewall turn them all off.

In addition, I noticed that in your example you used ftp://username@domain.net

When setting up a DW Remote Host, you don't use an address like you posted. Go back to my example. Use ftp.yourdomain.com or ftp.yourdomain.net, whatever that may be.

Then in the Login and Password field, make absolutely certain that this is what you use to get into your cPanel account on Bluehost.

EDIT: If it is a firewall issue, once you determine the offender, learn how to modify it appropriately and then turn it back on.

Is your domain name pointing to the BlueHost server? You may want to try using the server's IP address of the host to see if that makes any difference. You can find this under the Stats box on the left-hand side of the main cPanel page.

I have an older laptop that still has Dreamweaver MX2004 I just decided to see if I could set up the ftp on it. I was able to set up the ftp with no issues at all on it so I'm thinking there's an issue with Dreamweaver CS4.

Hi, I'm stuck with exactly the same problem. I wondered if any solution was found? I'm using CS4 on Vista. I've checked to see if the problem is with the firewalls and it is not. Very frustrating...... just want to get site set up!!

If anyone can help I'd be very grateful.

I found something that worked for me.

In Manage Sites, select 'New' then 'Site' as per normal in order to configure your website.

On the 'Remote Info' tab, select 'FTP' where it says access.

Now....... I was previously entering something like this for ftp host:

FTP host: ftp.example.com

However, I changed this to: example.com (so without the ftp prefix) and everything worked as it should! I guess it may have been a schoolboy error on my part to not realise this before - but if anyone else is making the same error that I was, this might help you!!

(Of course, the rest of the form still needs to be completed too!)
