Out outgoing emails not being sent

I have an ecommerce website and emails that are automatically generated by the site are not being sent. Such as when a customer places an order 2 emails are suppsoed to be sent: one to the customer (order confirmation and the other to me (the store owner). There is another feature to send all customers (currently 2 both test accounts) a newsletter and although I receive a confirmation that the emails are sent, but none actually are. I can send email from the contact us page without a problem. I am not using smtp
Anyone have any suggestions?

What e-commerce package are you using?

Bluehost does have a limit on the number emails that can be sent every day per BH account not per email address. If you go over this the rest are discarded(I'm told).
