1. Create content on your site that people will want to read.
2. Tell people about it so that those with web sites link to you.
The search engines will then find your site and list you based on what your page is about and how many related pages link to iit.

If it is a new site (new registered domain), it may take longer than a site, the search engines already know about. certain search engines add a filter so that new sites do not go up the rankings too quick.

Read up on serach engine optimization(SEO). There is a lot of competion to rank well on competitive keywords and you have to learn and work hard if you want to get traffic from serach engines. There are lot of tutorials on SEO on the net and webmaster forums like digitalpoint also must help.

A good thing to do is to create a robots.txt file for each of your sites which has information for the search spiders to crawl certain pages (or not), AND then submit your site for indexing to each of the major search engines. They usually have a link on their homepage to do just that.

Submitting to the search engines is a waste of time. If you have incoming links from other sites already listed then you'll get listed without needing to submit the site yourself. If you don't have incoming links then getting listed thousands of pages in is not going to help since few people even look at page three.
