I use a tool called Market Samurai to study the competition and their backlinks. I have achieved about 1500 backlinks to my domain name. And that is alot of work.
I just dont understand how anyone can get 15000 backlinks to their webpage ?? How do people go about getting that many backlinks ???

There a ton of methods to get backlinks quickly. Some of them are clean and some aren't, and it depends on how you want to play this game. There are quite a few tools out there that help you get backlinks quickly. If you need some help PM me, and I might be able to help.

People acquire backlinks through several means, such as blogging, forum posting, directory submissions, etc. Some outsource the job to third party SEO companies and individuals.
Automated software is not recommended for getting backlinks, as site owners might ban you for spamming.

People get huge numbers of relevant backlinks by creating content that people want to link to.
Almost all backlinks of any value are created by people other than the site owner. If 100,000 of your visitors each create one link then you have 100,000 backlinks.

15,000 may seem like allot when you are starting out but it tends to grow exponentially (not literally) but it appears that way over time. I have a 5 year old website that has over 10,000 links and it's not even that heavily networked. I have a new site (under 30 days) and I have over 300 links just by blogging, track backing and commenting a few hours a day.
I guess it just takes time to build that many links. I prefer not to use any automated system and yes - Market Samurai is one of the best pieces of software I currently use...

Just noticed that our backlinks updated in Google today. PR update a few days ago and backlinks updated today, I have a hunch Caffeine is just around the corner.

I think you are right - Caffeine is upon us all shortly. It may mix the SERPS up a little. We shall see

15,000 backlinks was probably achieved through spam (automated spam). There are a lot of sites that are either unmoderated or just FFA sites. 15,000 may be a lot, but if it's coming from worthless sites, it's still not gonna do anything in Google search rankings.

15,000 may be a lot
Not really, in real terms it is almost zero. 15,000,000 is a lot.
