View Full Version : Subdomain to add-on domain

I have an domain on another host but I would like to point to a subdomain off of my main account, at least for a message board which I am going to install on the subdomain.
Eventually, I am going to transfer that domain to bluehost as an add-on domain. Can that subdomain become an add-on domain with no change in the file structure? Ideally I would like to be able to change it - not remove it and add on a newly named add on - see below
If the answer to that is yes, will changing it screw up the message board set up that fantastico does? I assume not, since the folders will still be the same.
Thanks!
(BTW, what is the charge for additional add-on domains to an account, beyond the 6)

Yes, when you add a sub-domain, it creates a sub-folder in the main directory. Same think with an add-on domain. Just make sure that the add-on and sub-domains are the same names and the directory structure doesn’t change, then you should be fine.
And as far as I know, you cannot buy more add-on domains. Call or email support to verify

humm, didnt know that. Learned something new. But man, and extra 5 bucks a month, I'd just pay the extra 23 bucks and get a whole another account

I was just coming back to this thread to post that.
For just the $23 buck more..you would also get the benefit of more bandwidth and disk space. Also, 1 more addon domain than you would have if you just did the add 5 more..and you also would get a free domain name registration.
Now if you had to have a dedicated IP then it would cost you another $30.

If I understand what your saying is that you have a sub domain and at a later date you want to take a domain you already own and point it to the directory (as an addon domain) of the sub domain without moving any files around. Yes this is possible, inside your Addon Domains control panel on the second line when setting up your Addon domain it asks for the subdirectory and you simply put in whatever the sub domains directory is.

I'd just like to make sure I've understood both of these statements:
Yes, when you add a sub-domain, it creates a sub-folder in the main directory. Same think with an add-on domain. Just make sure that the add-on and sub-domains are the same names and the directory structure doesn’t change, then you should be fine.
And:

I want to be sure that installing an addon domain so that it points to an existing subdomain does not alter (or delete and replace!) the existing subdirectory under public_html.
It appears that in the process of adding an addon domain, a subdomain is created (that is, a new subdirectory is made under public_html and a subdomain redirected to it). But if I want to use an existing subdomain, will it simply connect to the existing folder?
