I have a website on cars. I was wondering what sort of content I should be adding, to rank higher in Google. It's such a board and popular topic; I cannot seem to rank high in any subject I write about. Any ideas how to succeed in such a tough online environment?

Talk about a broad subject! If you search the forums, there are already several threads related to this subject. I would weed through those to pick up some tips and tricks.
Your best bet is to research Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and find ways to improve your visibility. Key, of course, is the content, which it sounds like you have. Now it's just a matter of expanding your audience and getting links into your site from other related sites.

Cars is too broad a subject and will have some really tough competition in the search engines.
Try to find a niche for your site like vintage cars, sports cars or auto parts or even some more specialized topic which has relatively less competition.

Well what about a timeline on how cars developed throughout the centuries or a statistical view on how many cars are bought in different countries and name the best labels perhaps? Something like that would be quite interesting for various users I think - I know that it requires a lot of research.

Yes, the search engines love to see new and interesting new content added to your site. I like your idea about a timeline of cars...maybe a look through history? How cars have evolved, along with their safety, efficiency, and add-ons.

Laura,
I think cars is a pretty broad niche. What are you actually selling there? I'd spend some time building content pages on each car manufacturer and wikipedia style articles about every car they make.
I'd also have a blog where I could put news and updates etc.
