I've been active with bluehost for some four years. This is the first time I've tried this and I'm hoping there's a simple way:

My customer needs a domain name. I'd like him to buy his domain name (only his domain name, not a hosting plan) thru bluehost. With his own account. Then I'll set his domain name server and take it from there.

I wish to do it this way because I trust bluehost AND the other services I've depended on for years have all gone wacky with add-on fees and tricks and stuff. I want my customer to own his domain name and I want to refer him to some place that's reputable.

My research shows me bluehost doesn't offer such a service but I thought I'd post here and make sure. Then I'll continue looking for what I want. (The bluehost affiliate program doesn't work for me. The way I read it, the end customer buys a hosting package too. )

Thanks for your help.

No Bluehost dosn't sell just domain names, they sell hosting plans with a free domain. My quetion is why are doing something that just usally not done. The domain name and hosting should be with the same company, to just make life easier.

As Clarkey already stated, BH does not sell domain names separate from hosting plans. Is it possible for you to make the purchase and then have the customer reimburse you for the cost? Otherwise, why not have the customer make the purchase from a domain seller?

I don't agree. There is no reason that you cannot purchase hosting and domains from separate companies. In fact, I would prefer that in the case that I were to move from BH to another hosting service. All I would need to do is change the nameservers.

There are domain registrars who sell domains and who might do hosting as a side business.

There are hosting providers who sell hosting who might do domains as a side business.

Neither group will normally sell something from their side business unless you also buy their main product. Also a lot of people recommend keeping these two very different things separate - each with a company where it is their main business as that gives you the best functionality for each and also partly protects you if you have issues with one or other of the companies as you can't move both at the same time.

I was quite happy keeping the purchase of a domain name separate from my hosting company, BH, until very recently. I've owned my primary domain for about 12 years and I originally purchased it from a company in the same state as I resided in, thinking that would be some small protection against poor business practices in the future. Well of course they changed hands several times. Currently the action of buying, or in my case renewing, a domain with them, and others, I've checked, is chock full of gotchas. I even got burned a few months ago and a bogus domain name registration charge began appearing on my credit card which I'm now fighting. Purchasing and renewing a domain name is a very serious activity and I'm just tired of having to jump through all their hoops. So a referral asked me this week to set up his two web sites and I thought hey maybe BH would do it and you know what at least I trust them and making purchases at BH are pretty straightforward. But I guess it's not to be. Actually, believe it or not, when I started with BH about 3 or 4 years ago I really thought this would be part of the package somehow. I guess I didn't think it all through. So really it's all no big deal and I'll take care of my customer's domain name registration somewhere else like I have all along. It's all good.
