transfer a exiting domain name to BlueHost or not

I am new at BlusHost. I start by transfer a exiting domain name to BlueHost.

Can I apply for a brand-new domain name if I just change the DNS and don't complete the transfer processure to really transfer my exiting domain name from the old registar to BlueHost? Is it still free?

Or can I transfer my free domain name which registred by BlueHost from here to other registar if I want to change the host someday future?
